Middle Deschutes River Description

Most anglers and river users call the section of the Deschutes river between Bend Oregon and Lake Billy Chinook, the “Middle” Deschutes. This section of the Deschutes is unique in character, with it intense canyon walls, and rugged regions. By far this part of the Deschutes is the most difficult to access. There are a number of access points from both BLM and County property, but there is also a far amount of private property.

Anglers who fish the Middle will encounter rainbow trout and brown trout of varying sizes, with some brown trout reaching upwards of 20 inches.

Techniques & Tips

Dry fly fishing can be productive with big attractor dries like the Stimulator, Elk Hair Caddis, and Parachute Adams as well. Fishing stonefly and attractor nymphs are also picking up fish.

7-Day Forecast

With the river on the drop fishing is starting to heat up on the Middle Deschutes. There are a variety of Caddis, some PMD’s. Attractor dries with a small pheasant tail or bwo nymph dropper will be effective.
