How to fish El Capitan
Low water won’t stop bass action at El Capitan this year but El Cap is almost devoid of any brush or structure so most of the places which hold bass here are the bare spots between small rock piles primarily the upper north sections. In spring the best approach to locating bass will be to observe which bank areas have the flattest terrain for potential nesting, and where is the best offshore cover which proximate to such key spawning areas.
Patience and fish finders are the keys to finding and also note the banks and how they appear well up the hillsides. Angling divided between the bank and the main channel of the San Diego River (and the lake really looks like a river these days). The wild card: beginning with the post spawn, will be the dam arm; however, for the spring months,
El Capitan Lake is located some 30 miles northeast of San Diego and can be reached by taking El Monte Road 8 miles to the lake. El Monte connects with Lake Jennings Park Road from Highway 8 to the south. Crappie fishing gets going in February and March, the bass fishing is best from late February through April. The lake limit is five bass with a 15-inch minimum, and also you will find bluegill, blue and channel catfish.
A deep diving crankbait such as a Fat Rap (crawdad) or fire tiger Deep Little N or Fat Free Shad let you make a series of casts in and around targets leading up to your key cut, nub point, or shoreline rock cluster. Get the bait down to the bottom, then walk it over and through the rubble, pausing occasionally.
Because El Capitan’s best areas has silversides as well as shad as forage, small bladed spinnerbaits fished tight to the bank often score as well. lt‘s really on outside structure or early in the summer where the standard bladed Hildebrandt tandems are used most often by lake regulars.
Retrieve the small-bladed spinner- baits out to about 5 feet of water and make another cast. On the outside rockpiles or channel edges, however, make long casts and slow roll the bait so it nicks the bottom. On spots and contours like these, your best baits will be a jig and pig or plastic worm on El Capitan. All black, black/brown or brown/purple jig and pork combos in less than 10 feet of water.
Adding a rattle to the jig and shaking it in place or tapping it against a hard bottom really wakes up the early sea son biters. As for plastic Worms, black and brown with a blue vein are as traditional but don’t get locked in. El Cap is known for its “clear green” color and it is the best lake in San Diego County for green weenies, watermelon or motor oil colored plastic. Everything from 4 to 10 inches will get bit, but more bites are likely if you go with 6 inches and under. Carolina rigging is popular, but Texas rigs, dart heads and even drop shotting will be employed, although the latter is more suited for fishing the deeper structure spots.
